We had already docked by 0800 hours and after a nice bacon breakfast we had a walk into the town. Annette picked up a map on the way out (yet another free service provided on board, street map of port) and folded it up and promptly ignored it, wandering around aimlessly in the sunshine. from what we could see the prices in the town were higher than on the ship so we were not tempted to dip our hands into our pockets. I guess this is more of the cursed euro legacy.
We wandered along the front and soon came to a coastal fortress come star fort that was still part occupied by the French army, although the only signs I could see were a donkey and some goats. Nevertheless, the general fort was in pretty good repair and it seemed to be a feature of most of the ports we visited on the cruise.
The local cathedral was more of a manky old church than anything grander, whereas the statue of Napoleon was an over the top spectacular depicting the Corporal as Caesar. Gave it a quick kick and a curse and wandered round to look at the house where he was born. Nice plaque on the wall and plenty of gullible tourist queuing up to have a wander round but, as I had already read in the guide book it was torn down by angry locals when the Emperor incorporated Corsica as part of the republic.
We then wandered back to the boat and up to the poolside for the afternoon. I was still tired after the early starts and late nights and as the sun started to go down and we had been stood watching the ship sail out of the harbour I decided I’d had enough and said I was going down to the cabin for a bit. Apparently that was the wrong thing to say and Annette had a nice wobbly, going on about how I never do anything she wants to do. I quietly reminded her that we were both on a sodding ship which she always wanted and I really wasn’t bothered about a cruise, after which the wind rather left her sails although she quietly sulked for the rest of the night’s entertainment. Suited me as i managed to get an earlier night than previously. It would be another early start tomorrow as were off to visit Pisa.
