After around seven years in the wilderness, I’m begining to think we may have got some control back at the  club

After the debacle of the Kevin committee and it’s legacy, we were left with a committee of three, hardly a chorum, even less so as I was the chairman (still very opinionated) but, had no voting powers. That meant that if Ash or Alex agreed with each other, their decisions would always be accepted. Fortunately they are both sensible chaps and we muddled on aimlessly without even a committee meeting (Alex could never find the time to attend!)

So what changed? Dewi, a relatively new member asked for an agm, which under the club rules was his perogative, even if nobody took any notice of the committee elections again.  I took this as an opportunity to push for a couple more committee members to make a go of things.  Agm was largely plain sailing and although there was some general suopport and agreement for my call for two new posts, the apathy on voting for the new members was overwhelming.

We had three volunteers, Dewi was one (probably why he asked for the meeting) and of the two posts his was the only contested apointment. Matt had also voulenteered for the post of assistant treasurer (all posts were largely titular only) and so I called for a show of hand and there was a tied vote of one each!  After  a little cajoling dewi won 2 to 1. Nevertheless, we had a five man committee.

To my surprise we actually got Alex to show his face at the first meeting and had a good meeting with a fair bit of enthusiasm from Tom (other new member) and Dewi. Dewi had found a possible alternative venue  but, I felt it had far too many bad points to be viable (see committee meeting notes for details) and Tom (nominal ‘event’ organiser) was keen to get the club back into local shows and try to book a small open day to promote the club. Thus the quest to find the Grail as it was without doubt our most popular game and I for one wanted to try and win at the World Championships again.

So far so good;  we have a participation game and somebody to help run it, some enthusiasm to get thinks moving again and I found out a couple of days ago that the club website was down. I contacted Minime and he has quickly got it back up and running and also, in my opinion, improved it.  I also finished an abridged version of the Basingstoke weekend, which he has published.

It’s been a long time but, I finally feel like we are doing something to keep the club going.
