Well I haven’t stopped chuckling to myself yet as we start the second day since the decision to leave. I cannot believe how many people who were convinced the world would end if we didn’t remain in the eu are still trying to lump the ‘exit’ people with; death camp guards, Nazi war criminals, Pol Pot and whatever other infamous organisation they can think of. As a large majority where the under 25s, it is probably limited (ironically) to Darth Vaders side kicks.
I was annoyed by the blatant way the government tried to manipulate the BBC, to swing it’s reasonably unbiased reporting to favouring the eu remain side, by the threat of government interference into how the BBC was run and funded. Despite all this and celebrity idiots like Bob Geldof (I thought he really came across as a cameo inmate of Gotham Asylum) screaming we have to stay in eu or die. It still seemed very close and I was worried the turnout would be low.
The one thing that pleased me was the high turnout of voters, not as many as I’d have liked but, still enough to indicate how serious it had been taken by the nation. I dare say the reasonable weather encouraged many that would have remained at home but, that was all for the good. I myself, with my love of classic films and melodrama planned to play my part and I intended to cast my vote at 1200 hours However, there was far too much flapping with the registering and it was way past
before I got to make my mark.
I retired for the night, with early media coverage predicting Camerons minions would carry the day and I felt quite depressed by this prospect but, did not expect it would make a vast difference to my humble peasant life (unlike the millions who expected the world to end whatever the outcome). A not unusual awakaning at about 0300 hours with a raging thirst took me back down and as I sat with a cup of tea, curiosity got the better of me. I had to know the worst so I turned on the BBC news. (delighted to see it wasn’t Victoria Derbyshire) I heard one of the remain camp whining and simpering excuses and immediately took slightly more notice. Then I realised there was about a four point lead in favour of leaving. Even though it was clearly not all over even the Beeb chap was pointing out that the West Midlands, one of the largest regions still to return voting, is largely predicted to be fully in favour of exiting. I finsihed my tea and went back to bed feeling a little more hopeful.
The next morning I turned on the news to find we had indeed won and, although it was by a narrow margin, we would be leaving the eu. I haven’t really stopped chuckling since. I have not been so happy for a long time. I was quite prepared to be cast into the role of Tim the Enchanter cursing all those that kept us in for the rest of my life as each bit of Britishness was erroded. However, I’ll settle for this result.
What I have found enlightening and alarming is how fbuk has become a political battleground and how many people have proudly displayed their ignorance of the world by swallowing up the eu garbage and regurgitating it as though they had found the messages carved on blocks of stone in their living room. I wonder how these enlightened youngsters would re-act once they realised the wonderful eu armed forces would have been made up of conscripts. Certainly three or four years in the Foreign Legion. It is clear the government targeted the great unwashed once they realised they were heading for a thrashing. I think my favourite gem of post tear jerking analysis of why they lost was the great mathamatical demonstration that votes of the over 80’s should have been vetoed because they amounted to 5% and “…5% of over 80s clearly counts more than 75% of under 25s…”
Clearly there has been a strong dislike of this undemocratic monster for some time now and I am really pleased it has been struck a blow. Reports of the Dutch wanting their own referndum warms the cockles of my heart as I really won’t be completely satisfied until it collapses under it’s own corrupt economic policies and gets forgotten it the histories of worthless empires.
