It’s not often I post on The Planet but I had to make a point about compasses and mobile phones re last week’s wargame “Action under Sail”.
On Earth, putting a magnet next to a mobile phone which has an app on it will not alter the which way North is determined.
This is because the mobile phone is linked to the GPS system run by the Yanks. It involves four satellites minimum so the phone can always get a signal no matter where you are on Earth. Being on the South Pole will not make any difference. You can still see a satellite.
Of course on Planet Orton, the Laws of physics are by and large a basis for negotiation so I if you try it anywhere near Bilston, you could end up in Sedgley by mistake.
Don’t say you weren’t warned.
