We have noticed over the last few months the decay in Mike’s breath and have put it down to his medication and it appears we may well be right but, not how we thought.
He said Friday he had lost another tooth, the second in a month, and commented that he thought all his teeth were falling out. Knowing he was on the evil Statins I decided to do some research on-line and was not very surprised to find several American dental/medical sites all linking Statin drugs to: dry mouth, bitter taste, decay and gum disease.
While they have not come right out and said it is the cause, mainly because it is still being studied, the early indications are that this is yet another side effect that the manufacturers three and a half year study did not list. They have found that the dryness alone reduces the defence against decay that saliva naturally produces, They then listed a lot of dentistry acronyms that basically meant the stuff kills your teeth and gums.
On the plus side, the tooth Mike lost this time had a gold filing and he got £80 from a jeweller for it. Every cloud has a silver lining!
